”Everyone’s crying for a pregnant elephant, but what about a pregnant Muslim woman?”, People infuriated after Safoora Zargar denied bail

The Additional Sessions Judge, Dharmendra Rana, while dismissing the appeal filed by Zargar, said, "I do not find merits in the bail petition. It is accordingly terminated."

An Indian court has rejected bail for a pregnant Jamia Millia Islamia student Safoora Zargar, saying it found “no merits” in her application.

The Additional Sessions Judge, Dharmendra Rana, while dismissing the appeal filed by Zargar, said, “I do not find merits in the bail petition. It is accordingly terminated.”

Zargar, who was detained by the Delhi Police in April for reportedly heading the anti-CAA protests in various parts of Delhi in mid-February, has been earlier denied bail on two previous occasions.

The court, however, directed the jail officials to provide adequate medical aid and assistance to the heavily pregnant student.

Hypocrisy of people

Many people on social media raised questions regarding the hypocrisy of those who are mourning the death of the pregnant elephant but have no sympathy for Zargar.

A few days ago, the pregnant elephant died in India after a local allegedly fed her a pineapple stuffed with crackers. The incident causes massive outrage in the country.

However, Safoora has been forced to stay in prison despite being pregnant while under the threat of the coronavirus, and no one has shown any concern.

One of the users wrote, “The only fault of Sarfoora Zargar is, not being a pregnant elephant. That way, the shamelessly discriminating and privileged mob would have shown their fake outrage”.

Another said, “Safoora Zargar denied bail again today. She is in Tihar Jail since April 10. Everyone is crying for a pregnant elephant, but a pregnant Muslim woman is the least of anyone’s concern.”
