Brazil has stringent laws on abortion, but terminations are allowed in rape cases when the mother's life is at risk.
Protests have sparked in Brazil after the personal details of a 10-year-old rape victim were published online.
The girl’s name was posted by an anti-abortion activist attempting to stop her from having an abortion.
Following the online post, abortion opponents gathered outside the hospital where the girl was due to have the termination procedure.
According to the international media outlet, the girl told the Police that her uncle had been raping her since she was six and that she had remained quiet out of fear. The Police arrested her uncle on Wednesday.
The case has generated widespread anger in Brazil. A Brazilian judge has ordered Facebook, Google, and Twitter to remove the victims’ details from their sites.
Judge Samuel Soares ruled that the companies had 24 hours to remove the information or face a fine of $9,000 a day.
Strict Abortion Laws
Brazil has stringent laws on abortion, but terminations are allowed in rape cases when the mother’s life is at risk.
Even though the girl had been granted legal consent to terminate her pregnancy, anti-abortion activists tried to stop it by holding a loud protest outside the hospital.
They screamed at the hospital staff, calling them “killers” while trying to force their way into the building, but were dispersed by the Military Police.
The girl was taken onto the hospital’s premises in a car, where she entered the building by a side door.
