It is a six week long paid internship for which twenty candidates have been selected. It is the first cohort; therefore, candidates have been limited to the three major cities. As the program grows, the organization plans to expand it to other cities as well.
The fundamental objective of the internship is to equip differently-abled individuals to become financially independent and to encourage a corporate culture that is diverse and inclusive.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, the internship program has been enacting in a virtual setting to ensure that the interns’ skill development takes place in a safe environment.
Each intern has been assigned a mentor. These mentors are selected from the existing PTCL full-time employees. Before the start of the internship, they were given disability training so that they can communicate and train their interns.
Some of the interns have hearing disabilities, and some have physical disabilities. To ensure that the virtual communication between the intern and the mentor goes smoothly, PTCL has collaborated with the start-up DeafTawk. They will be providing technical counsel and interpreters who will be working 9 to 5 during the internship.
Speaking to a local news outlet, The PTCL representatives shared that the placement of the interns has been done to ensure they learn the skills that will benefit them in the future.
The minimum criteria for applying for the program was graduation. At the end of the internship program, the candidates will be graded on a scorecard, which will be a part of the certificate.
