PTI Government Takes Unconventional Steps For Welfare of Disabled People

Pakistan, even while having international obligations to ensure welfare for disabled persons, has maintained a blind eye towards them for the most part. With depriving them of their basic rights, the disabled individuals have also been denied their political representation hence their problems have never gotten the voice.

This stresses for a comprehensive law for the wellbeing of people with special needs. In Pakistan, they are non-existent. Mostly are only subjected to the 1981 ordinance, which only talks about the employment rights.

According to 1998 census, 2.38pc to 2.5pc of the population has disabilities. The 2017 census shows a decline, standing at 1.6pc so that 3.2 million, raising questions about the credibility. Coming at par with the human rights dynamics of the modern world, the incumbent government has taken the first step and has promised to undertake significant measures for their welfare.

Following are the few steps that have been taken:

2) Complying with the international standards, people with hearing disabilities to be facilitated. Providing driving licenses to eligible indivisuals will be government’s responsibility as well.

3) Devising mechanism for the free provision of wheelchairs to the disabled individuals will be Federal and Provincial government’s responsibility as well. 

4) Prime Minister gives specific orders to the Ministry of Housing and Works to allot homes to disabled individuals. 

5) Free health card will be provided to disabled indivisuals so they can avail the best and qualitative health facilities at first priority.
