‘Punjab Govt should take immediate steps for security of Aurat March 2020’, Fawad Chaudhary

Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhary has demanded the Punjab Government provide security to Aurat March protestors.
According to him, this is necessary due to the threats the women’s rally has been receiving.

“If [TLP chief] Maulana Khadim Hussain Rizvi and [Lal Masjid cleric] Maulana Abdul Aziz can openly engage in hate speech, then peaceful groups should also have the right to express their thoughts’’, the Minister said.

He added that Aurat March participants and organizers should be allowed freedom of speech, even if people disagree with their views.

A few days earlier to Fawad’s comments, the Lahore High Court (LHC) wrapped up a petition filed by Advocate Azhar Siddiqui against the Aurat March 2020, and issued orders for strict security to be provided to the protestors.

Advocate Siddique’s petition claimed that Aurat March was against the ‘norms of Islam’, and it’s hidden agenda is to spread ‘vulgarity, anarchy and hatred’.

However, LHC Chief Justice Mamoon Rashid Sheikh directed the district administration to make a decision on Aurat March organizers’ application to hold the events. He advised rally leaders to respect the legal and constitutional limits.

The Chief Justice added that officials should meet the organizers and assist them, and that strict security should be arranged at entry and exit points.

When the court remarked that last year’s Aurat March had ‘offensive’ placards, the lawyer representing Aurat March Nighat Dad said that organizers were not responsible for the placards. He said his goal was to improve security for the March.
