Punjab to suspend biometric verification for vehicles. Here's why

Punjab Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department has decided to temporarily suspend biometric verification for three months.

This happened after the authorities encountered a glitch in the biometric registration and transfer system. The malfunction appeared after a discrepancy between the new and old vehicle registration process. The department had previously replaced the old manual system with a new biometric one earlier this year but was unable to integrate the old system into the new one, which caused delays.

The suspension will extend from 11th September to 11th December 2022. In the meantime, the government will add data of 177,000 old vehicles into the new system. The department further clarified that these three months will be a ‘grace period’ for those who are looking to register or transfer their car.

The Punjab government has also linked the biometric system with NADRA. Under this, the buyers or sellers will have to biometrically register or transfer their car in a span of 30 days. The system will include data of all cars into a unanimous database, which will allow convenient tracking of accountability and tracking. The public and car dealers also appreciated the excise department for its initiative, as it offers transparency.
