- In 2014, the construction of the project started and it is valued worth $1.5 billion.
- Regardless of delays, travelers are hopeful that the project will operate soon and provide services to the citizens.
After the countless wait and fail to hit deadlines, the first latest train metro system (Orange Line Train Metro) of Pakistan is finally ready to launch for an opening at the start of next year.
According to the source, the Orange Line Train Metro (OLMT) will be started on three months trial then it will properly be launched in March next year.
The Chinese project has been stalled several times over the years. Long court battles on heritage sites and the required power supply to run the system are the main reasons for the delay.
“Electricity will be provided from eight grid stations, but currently UET grid station and three stations of Shahnoor are the only ones supplying power. The project requires an aggregate of 75 megawatts of electricity to operate but alternate electricity systems have been provided,” said General Manager Mass Transit Authority, Ozair Shah.
Next year in March PM Khan will inaugurate the system. However, no date for the launch has been finalized yet. Regardless of delays, travelers are hopeful that the project will operate soon and provide services to the citizens.
“We have been waiting for this project for a very long time,” said one citizen. “I hope the trains start running soon,” he added.
Project worth billions
In 2014, the construction of the project started and it is valued worth $1.5 billion. Moreover, the Chinese Exim Bank provided $1.3 billion while remaining Rs24 billion were taken from the provincial saving accounts.
When the system will start functioning, the train will provide services to 30, 000 commuters every day. However, initially, 250 passengers will travel in a day. By the year 2023, it is expected that 300, 000 will be facilitated.
According to the source, many Chinese trains have been imported and can run over 27 kilometers. Initially, Punjab police will provide security whereas, at the later stage security will be outsourced.
