As a part of the Prime Minister’s agriculture emergency program,. a trout farming project worth Rs. 2.355 billion has been inaugurated in Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The project was launched on Thursday by Sahibzada Muhammad Mehboob Sultan, Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research.

The group put together for this project, that relates to developing of the fisheries sector, after consulting with the provinces came up with this program. It contains three projects, shrimp farming, trout fish farming, and cage farming or cage culture, all of these in Gilgit Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

“Pakistan is blessed with vast reservoirs of freshwaters in the form of rivers, canals, and lakes, therefore there is ample opportunity to develop aquaculture/fish farming, but unfortunately the area has so far been severely neglected,” – stated the minister.

He also said that per capita, annual fish consumption was just 2 kg in Pakistan, but around the world, it was around 20 kg. Pakistan is the only country in the world where despite having a 1,100 km coastline, did not use it for farming or marine culture.

“Our government has given due importance to the development of fisheries sector and hence going to formulate first-ever fisheries policy with the technical support from FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization),” – he further stated.

As per him, this project will help in reducing poverty and will also meet the food requirements. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan are blessed with natural water resources and these waters are very much suitable for marine culture of trout farming.

This program will also increase tourism, and also play a part in earning foreign exchange from exporting of trout.
