Ricky Ponting lauds Babar Azam & Shaheen Afridi [Video]

Here's what the cricket legend has to say

Pakistani players celebrate a wicket

Australian cricket great Ricky Ponting can’t wait to see Australia tour Pakistan for the first time in 24 years. The legendary batter is expecting a “mouth-watering” series when the Baggy Greens visit Pakistan.

The two times world cup winning captain heaped praise on Pakistan’s star performers, Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi. Ricky Ponting saw the two cricketers during Pakistan’s 2019 tour of Australia and is greatly impressed with their evolution as players since then.

Talking about the left arm pacer, Ponting said that during Pakistan’s tour of Australia, he bowled fast and troubled the batters with his ability to swing the new ball back into the right-handers.

Regarding Babar Azam, the legendary cricketer stated that the Pakistani skipper has been great in white ball cricket. He also recalled the right handed batter’s famous hundred at the Brisbane against the likes of Hazlewood, Starc and Cummins.

“It was like, ‘I have heard a lot about him and I have seen a fair bit of his while-ball stuff, but this guy is the real deal’.

“I think I said then that for this guy, the sky is the limit. It’s only a matter of time I felt before he was going to be either the No.1-ranked Test batter in the world or certainly challenging for it,” Ricky Ponting added.

According to the former Aussie captain, the one thing he always notices in the visiting young batters is “if they can play well off the back foot in Australia, and particularly through the off-side with a straight bat.”

“Babar did that and hit on the front foot back down the ground as well. These are just things that I look for as markers and indicators in touring batters when they come to Australia and Babar he ticked both those boxes.”

During Pakistan tour of Australia, Ricky Ponting had also praised Babar Azam. Here’s what he had said:

Australia tour of Pakistan will start with a test match on March 4. The series comprises of three test, as many ODIs and a T20 match.
