Russia and Pakistan to collaborate for modernization of Steel Mills

Russian delegation joins hands with Sindh government to undertake many developmental projects.

Recent reports state that a Russian delegation has agreed to submit proposals for the modernization of Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM).

How did the delegation agree?

The Russian delegation met The Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah in Karachi , and expressed an interest in working with the Sindh government in several sectors, including hydro-treatment facilities, waste processing, and waste-to-energy. According to reports, the two will collaborate under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, which means that joint workings will be performed by the Sindh government and the Russian delegation.

Modernization of Pakistan Steel Mills

Addressing the delegation, the Sindh CM said:

The mill does not only need an overhaul but also needs to be modernized to meet current steel production requirements.

Following the discussion, the visiting Russian delegation decided to send a team to visit the mill to assess its modernization requirements.

Reports further state that the government and the delegation decided to take up the modernization of the steel project on a priority basis as its feasibility and mode would be studied and shared with the provincial government.

A power plant might be established at Dhabeji.

Establishment of Power Plant

Reports state the meeting also concluded that studies would be performed to understand the feasibility of establishing a 50MW power waste-to-energy plant in Dhabeji.

Regarding the power plant, the chief minister said:

There is a railway line from Karachi to Dhabeji where a power plant can be installed. Another site for the project could be Jam Chakro.

According to sources, the Russian experts are now gearing up to visit these sites to finalize the power plant project.

Andrey Zubal leads the Russian delegation. The members include the Consul General of Russia in Karachi, Rus Welding, Dr. Aleksandr G. Khozin, Ahmed Rana of Concord Ventures (PVT) Ltd., and Attaché Russian Consulate, Pavel Yamanov.
