Pakistan's Rice Exports Increased 38.58% in First Five Months of FY 2019-20Russia has allowed rice imports from Pakistan from Friday by lifting its previous ban.

Based on the guidelines, four companies from the South Asian country are now authorized to export rice to the Russian Federation.

The ban was lifted after attempts were made by the Ministry of National Food Security, the Ministry of Commerce, and the trade wing of the Pakistani embassy in the Russian capital of Moscow.

The trade attaché in Moscow has also urged the FSVPS (Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance) to carry out a virtual inspection of other rice shipping enterprises in Pakistan, so that they may also be permitted to export rice to Russia.

Meanwhile, Russia has also shown a keen interest in importing sesame seeds from Pakistan and inquired about a record of sesame exporters.

It is pertinent to note that the import of rice from Pakistan was outlawed by the Russian Federation in May 2019 after the discovery of the Khapra beetle (Trogoderma granarium), one of the world’s most destructive pests, in a rice consignment exported from Pakistan.

Russia has now lifted the ban after the Pakistani side presented Russia with all the required technical information, convictions on the Pakistan Plant Quarantine system, pest monitoring, and control program in rice-growing regions and rice enterprises.

Initially, four rice enterprises — two from Karachi, one from Lahore, and one from Chiniot — have been confirmed by the National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) Russia for importing rice from Pakistan.

The consent to additional rice units shall be subjected to virtual attestation by the plant quarantine department of the Department of Plant Protection (DPP).
