Salma Lakhani becomes the first Muslim to be appointed as Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, Canada

Salma Lakhani of Edmonton is a long-time community advocate and a successful business owner. Recently she was named as the new Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. According to Canadian history, Lakhani is the first Muslim to be appointed to the ceremonial role.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Salma Lakhani\\’s appointment in a news release by stating:
Ms. Lakhani is devoted to supporting people in her community, from new immigrants and young people to women and families. As lieutenant-governor of Alberta, I know she will serve the people of her province and our country well and continue to be a source of inspiration for all the Canadians.

Through her work to advance education, health care, women\\’s empowerment, human rights, and support for new immigrants, she continues to be a champion of diversity, pluralism, and inclusion.

The Profile of Lakhani
Lakhani was born in Uganda, and she completed an honors degree in clinical biochemistry from the University of Manchester. Lakhani was an immigrant to Canada. She has been living in Edmonton for more than 40 years.
Lakhani is a founding member of a movement that helps vulnerable women access education. She has served on the movement\\’s advisory committee for the past decade. Moreover, she owns and operates an early childhood education center.
In 2005, Lakhani was awarded the Alberta Centennial Medal for outstanding achievements in the province. Following this, in 2012, she was awarded the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal honoring her service to Canada.
Lakhani\\’s current role as the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, the highest officer rank in a province, is responsible for carrying out a variety of official duties. These official duties include swearing in the premier and the cabinet, opening each legislative assembly session, and signing the bills into laws.
