Sanam Saeed’s ‘Zindagi Gulzar Hai’ character was an inspiration for Kalank – says Alia Bhatt

Alia Bhatt, even in the shortest span in the Bollywood industry, has really made her mark. Challenging herself further and pulling off a very unconventional role, Alia is starring in the upcoming movie Kalank – a story situated in the pre-independent era. The story revolves around an elite family, as many of its hidden truths begin to unfold with the rising tensions in the near-partition time frame.

The initial songs and looks give a fair idea of Alia’s work in the film, and it is nothing less of what one can expect from her. However, in her recent interview, she has revealed her inspiration behind her character (she is playing Roop, a dancer) in her upcoming movie and it is none other than our very own Kashf.

Kashf from the very popular Zindagi Gulzar Hai, played by Sanam Saeed, is a very simple yet extremely strong character. The character reflects a spectrum of energy – very vulnerable and very powerful – existing in parallel.

“Abhishek asked me to watch Zindagi Gulzar Hai. The character of the girl (Kashaf played by Sanam Saeed) in the show is very much how [my character] Roop will deal with the situation. She has responsibility on her shoulders so she is not always a happy person. She is vulnerable yet strong. It is difficult (to bring so many) layers – unhappy, vulnerable and strong to a character. Abhishek kept saying that I should be irritating.” – she said.
Sanam Saeed was over-whelmed, and responded to Alia’s comments on Twitter.

People further extended their appreciation for Kashf’s role, and commented that if Alia becomes half as good as Sanam, she will be quite fortunate.
