Sargodha: Two sanitary workers die of asphyxiation while cleaning a sewer line late at night, families protest
Family members of the victims blocked the roads at the general bus stand and Noori Gate by placing the bodies of the deceased workers.
Two sanitary workers Faisal Danial and Nadeem alias Deema of Metropolitan Corporation were asphyxiated in Sargodha while cleaning a sewer line. However, another worker, Javed Michael, was transferred to DHQ hospital in critical condition.
Sources have revealed that family members of the victims blocked the roads at the general bus stand and Noori Gate by placing the bodies of the deceased workers and accused respective officials who allegedly ordered them to work on Sunday late night without taking preventive measures.
On Monday, the entire sanitary staff of the MC observed a complete strike and expressed their grave concern over MC officials’ alleged apathy and negligence. The officials usually forced the workers to work without taking prudent steps despite knowing the lethal consequences of sewer gas.
Faisal Danial, and Nadeem, died while desilting a maintenance hole and died of poisonous gas while Javed Michael fainted and was shifted to a local hospital.
Rescue 1122 reached the scene but was unable to recover the bodies of the sanitary workers. However, another worker Shahbaz succeeded in tracing bodies after eight-hour efforts.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, Usman Buzdar, took notice of the incident, sought a report from the commissioner, and was also directed to take strict action against those responsible for the incident.
The Commissioner Metropolitan Corporation, Dr. Farah Masood, formed an inquiry committee and sought a report within three days.
Following this, three supervisors were suspended from service over their alleged negligence resulting in the death of the sanitary workers.
