Saudi court sentences Imam of Grand Mosque to a decade in prison for 'condemning concerts and events'

The Saudi Court of Appeals has sentenced the Imam of the Grand Mosque to ten years in prison.

This came after the Court of Appeal overturned the Specialised Criminal Court’s decision, which acquitted Sheikh Al-Talib of the charges filed against him.

Grand Mosque’s Imam prisoned for ten years

48-year-old Al-Talib was arrested in August 2018, but there was no official explanation for the arrest. During the time he was handcuffed, he was an imam in Makkah. However, according to the social media advocacy group, Prisoners of Conscience, he was arrested after Al-Talib delivered a public sermon on the duty in Islam to speak up against evil in public.

Talib condemned events and concerts, which, he said, broke away from the country’s ‘religious and cultural norms.’ The former Imam has a massive following across the globe, with thousands watching his recitations of the Holy Quran and sermons on YouTube.

His arrest could have also been driven by Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman’s efforts to diversify the oil-dependent economy and change Saudi society. As MBS assumed de facto power as Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, authorities arrested many imams and clerics, who criticized his reform agenda.

A spokesperson for the group Democracy for the Arab World Now (Dawn), Abdullah Alaoudh, condemned the prison sentence. He said that it is a part of a growing pattern of clerics and imams facing imprisonment for speaking up against the reforms imposed by MBS.

He added that MBS’ oppression threatened every group, which could be seen by the imprisonment of women activist Salma Alshehab for 34 years for calling for ‘real social reforms.’

”What is common between all political prisoners including Imam Al Talib is that they peacefully expressed their opinions and got arrested for it,” he remarked.
