Malala has become the voice of education across the world, even if her own country has abandoned her. Soon after she has been honoured with Harvard award for activism, Texas’ school is being named after her to celebrate her unique contributions to women education, especially in underprivileged countries.
Fort Bend ISD (Texas’ Fort Bend Independent School District) has voted to name district’s 51st elementary school as Malala Yousafzai Elementary School on Monday.
The process of choosing the name included receiving contributions from the community members. Then, the names were shortlisted and the board finally made this decision. The committee included parents, teachers, staff, students and board members and chose from the 100 names that were submitted.
The district board decides to name the school after someone who has influenced the educational sphere and has made significant contributions towards the community and the name should ”lend prestige and status to an institute of learning”.
“Fort Bend ISD is proud to name Malala Yousafzai Elementary in honour of a true advocate for education. Our FBISD Profile of a Graduate outlines the skills and attributes graduates should possess upon graduation from our schools. Through her compassion for others and servant leadership, Yousafzai is an embodiment of these characteristics, which we are trying to instil in our students. We look forward to hearing of the many successes of the school and its students in the future” – said the FBISD Superintendent of Schools, Dr Charles Dupre. (Source: Express Tribune)
It is a matter of great prestige that Malala’s contributions are being recognized on an international level and she continues to inspire women from every cultural and national origin. The school is currently under construction and will open by January 2020.
