For over a century, Hart Island has been used to bury decedents who have not been claimed by any family member.

New York City has started burying its coronavirus victims in mass graves.

A representative for the Mayor’s Office, Freddi Goldstein, told a source, “For over a century, Hart Island has been used to bury decedents who have not been claimed by any family member. We will continue using the Island in the same fashion during the crisis. People who have passed away from the coronavirus and who fit this description will be buried on the Island in the coming days.”

The Mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, also confirmed that the number of burials on the Island has increased. He said only people being buried there are those who have not been claimed by a family member or loved one.

Troubling new photos released Thursday show nearly a dozen contracted workers in protective suits burying piles of wooden coffins in a mass grave.
