In a significant development in Pakistan’s foreign policy sphere, Pakistan’s Senate Chairman is contesting for International Parliamentary Union (IPU) presidency. IPU is a global organization of national parliaments.

179 countries are members of the union while the presidential elections are set to be held in December. Sanjrani was nominated by National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser.

A spokesperson of the Senate, while speaking to a local media channel, called it a determining moment for Pakistan. He said that Sanjarani’s IPU presidential election will further enhance the prestige of the parliament.

What is IPU?

The IPU is an organization that stands for empowering parliamentarians and supporting them to promote peace, democracy, and sustainable development across the world.

IPU also stands for increasing women’s representation in the parliament, bridging the gender gap, defending the human rights of the parliamentarians while upholding the law.

In addition, the organization is working to help parliaments fight terrorism, cyber warfare, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, creating a global space for parliamentary diplomacy, dialogue, and networking and encourage youth participation in parliaments and empower young MPs.

This, undoubtedly, is a significant step in the country’s foreign policy, specifically keeping in mind the current political climate in the region and the world.
