In a major upset during the Senate election, the joint candidate of the opposition parties, Yousaf Raza Gilani, has been elected senator from Islamabad by defeating Abdul Hafeez Shaikh of the ruling party.
Yousaf Raza Gilani, the former Prime Minister and the PPP leader enjoyed the support of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), an alliance of a dozen opposition parties against Prime Minister Imran Khan’s embattled government.
Perks of being a senator
Senators have access to all the perks and privileges granted to National Assembly members. However, the basic salary of an elected senator of the Upper House is PKR 150,000 a month, but many of their daily expenses are compensated by the state.

Moreover, The Senate member is also provided a Blue passport and offered 25 business-class open air tickets, which can be used by the senate member or his or her family.
They also pocket an air-conditioned class and second-class fair allowance in the form of a travel stipend. The fare for a business class seat is PKR 150 per kilometer for air travel, while PKR 10 per kilometer is for road travel.
Free telephone service is also available at the senators’ residences. Other benefits include free medical care equivalent to a Grade 22 officer.
