The educational institutes across the country were closed on the 26th of November due to the second outbreak of the pandemic. Following this, the Federal Government announced:
The schools will remain closed until the 10th of January 2021. The reopening of schools afterward will depend upon improvement in the Covid-19 situation.
As the 10th of January draws near, the uncertainty looming around educational institutes’ reopening has intensified. The Federal Education Minister, Shafqat Mahmood, has added to this uncertainty with his latest TV statement.
Speaking in a TV show on Friday, Mahmood said:
The opening of schools on the given date is unlikely due to the current situation of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.
Admitting that the schools’ closure has impacted students’ education, Mahmood stated:
There is no denying that students’ education suffered a lot due to the Covid-19 lockdown; however, we managed to continue the education process through online classes. We cannot risk children’s lives for the sake of education.
The Education Minister further explained:
The new mutation of Covid-19 has entered Pakistan, and the situation is being closely monitored. Any decision on the resumption of on-campus classes will be made with the input of the Ministry of Health.
Talking about the decision-making process, the Minister said that a meeting of the inter-provincial education ministers would be held on the 4th of January 2021 to review the situation. In the session, the officials of the health ministry will share their input. After an open discussion, the decision of whether or not schools should be reopened will be taken accordingly.
During the show, Shafqat Mehmood added:
I vow to implement the national uniform curriculum from 2021 to enforce a single curriculum in all public, private schools, and madrasahs.
