Shane Watson reveals why he thinks PSL is better than BBL in his latest blog
BBL focuses more entertainment gimmicks and the quality of the game is compromised
Former Australian Cricketer Shane Watson, in his latest T20 Stars blog, criticized Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL). He asserted that the quality of the game played in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and Indian Premier League (IPL) is much superior.
Watson, who plays for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL, argued that BBL focuses more entertainment gimmicks and the quality of the game is compromised.
“The one thing that the IPL and PSL do is make the quality of the cricket, the product, the number one priority,” Watson wrote in his T20 Stars blog.
“They know that if this is of the highest quality possible, then the longevity of the tournament and the commercial growth and success will look after itself. Don’t get me wrong they have all of the bells and whistles as well, however, the glitz and glamour go on before and after the matches but very rarely does the entertainment affect the players’ ability to perform at their best. This is where the BBL has really lost its way.”
Shane talks about Australian cricket culture:
Veteran all-rounder believes that putting mics on players during the game is nothing but an unproductive attention-seeking tactic. He said that these fun tricks might be enjoyable for fans but they are not comfortable for the players, as they distract them from concentrating on the game.
“One of the gimmicks that I really feel takes away from the quality of the cricket product is the mic’ing up of players – up to 2 players from each team fielding are being mic’d up with a significant amount of the captains being one of the two players,” Shane said.
Shane added that how is a captain supposed to have his mind on the game when he is being interviewed regularly. He said that the team leader should be focusing on what is required for his team and his own performance instead of media.
