Top leaders of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League (PMLN) engaged in another Twitter spat. The reason? BRT Peshawar.

Peshawar Development Authority (PDA) has notified the provincial government a few months back that the cost of Peshawar’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project has increased by another Rs. 3 billion. It brought the cost up to a total of Rs. 71 billion.

The PDA is working on a much-delayed project, which has missed numerous deadlines. These delays have caused embarrassment to the provincial government on multiple occasions.

PMLN leader Shehbaz Sharif took a dig at PTI-led KP government, alleging it of corruption in the BRT Peshwar project.

”Cost of Peshawar Metro (still incomplete) is almost equal to the cost of Lahore, RWP-Islamabad & Multan BRTs combined. Lahore BRT 27km @ Rs 29.65B cost AND Peshawar BRT 27.6 km @ Rs. 90+ Billion cost. No wonder PTI got stay orders from courts to prevent corruption inquiry”

”Even though there were groundless & false accusations of corruption against the 3 BRT projects built by PMLN & they were derided as ‘Jangla’ bus, these were completed in record time & provide dignified & safe travel to the citizens, especially women & the daily wage earners”, Shehbaz continued.

Responding to Sharif’s tweet, KP CM Pervez Khattak said that the work on the project is complete and only the IT system on the project is yet to be installed. He added that the cost of the project is 66 billion, contrary to 90 billion quoted by Shehbaz Sharif.

”1/3 BRT’s main corridor & its feeding routes have been completed, only the IT system is in its completion stage. The total cost of this project isn’t 90 bn as quoted by you, but its 66 bn. The cost of BRT’s main corridor isn’t more than that of Lhr Metro even after a period of 5 yrs”
