A Pakistani-German co-production named Discount Workers has been making international buzz.
The short-film was screened on the 11th of September, honoring the eight anniversary of the Baldia Factory fire incident that killed nearly 260 workers.
The story revolves around Abdul Aziz and Saeeda Khatoon, who lost their beloved children in the fire. The victims of the unfortunate incident were sewing clothes for a German brand named KiK.
The movie has been co-directed by a Pakistani Filmmaker, Ammar Aziz, and a German Filmmaker and lawyer, Christopher Patz. It exposes a multitude of facets that led to this tragic event. Before the textile factory was burned to the ground, it was awarded SA 8000 certificate, which guarantees occupational health and safety protection to its employees.
Even after this tragedy, nothing has changed. Hundreds and thousands of workers still work in poor conditions, which is affecting and deteriorating their health. Global audit firms need to understand the criminal negligence in such cases.
The German Filmmaker regarding the movie states that we would contribute towards a global movement through this joint venture. It would help hold major organizations and companies accountable for human rights violations by not providing proper working circumstances.
