Sign language becomes mandatory on TV channels after President Alvi signs bill

In a positive new development, sign language has become mandatory on TV channels. President Arif Alvi signed the Access to the Media (Deaf) Persons Act 2022. Under this new initiative, all commercial and state-run channels will have to show news bulletins with sign language translators to assist special person’s access to the media.

Sign language becomes mandatory on news channels

In a statement that was issued by the President’s office, once the Act has been implemented for six months, no news bulletins on private, public, or state-run electronic media will be allowed in Pakistan without sign language interpreters. Within one year of the Act’s implementation, the government will ensure compliance with it, meaning, that strict action will be taken to ensure that the rules set under this new act are followed.

The Act has made it necessary that commercial and government media organizations incorporate sign language interpreters in their overall work and shows, within at least six months. This is especially mandatory so that the initiative comes into effect at the same time across Pakistan.

When was the bill introduced?

The Senate’s standing committee on information and broadcasting passed the ”Acess of Media (Deaf) Persons Bill 2022″ at the start of this year. It was introduced initially by Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Saleem Mandviwalla who issued a briefing to the committee that was supervised by Senator Faisal Javed.

He further laid emphasis on the growing sense of isolation among special people, who are unable to watch television or catch up with the news and the current affairs of the nation. The senator requested the cooperation of the information ministry and the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority or PEMRA to implement the bill efficiently since it has already been approved by the relevant authorities.
