The Sindh police have decided not to consider a ‘request’ of the provincial administration pursuing the removal of the investigating officer of the Nazim Jokhio murder case.

The top police officers believe any such move would badly hurt the law enforcement agency’s reputation since all eyes are set on the case’s conclusion after the grief-stricken widow’s video statement. She pardoned all suspects, including the Pakistan Peoples Party MPA Jam Awais and his brother MNA Jam Abdul Karim.

The new development in the case emerged a few days ago when the Sindh home department approached the inspector general of police. The department asked him to change the IO of the case for not conceding the “legal advice by the prosecutor general” and replace him with a new “capable, neutral, and impartial” officer.

Legal experts, however, termed the letter as a “strange move,” stating the prosecutor general had no right to advise the law enforcement agency to substitute an IO, as it was only the police authorities’ right to change any official.

“The investigating officer of the Jokhio murder case is not going anywhere,” said a source privy to the latest decision of the Sindh police on the home department’s notice.

“The Sindh police, as a law enforcement institution, makes decisions to improve performance. It is not bound to go for the judgments in line with the direction of others for their promising performances.

“Secondly, the case has gained attention at the national level. The Sindh police cannot make decisions which hurt its reputation,” the source said.

Referring to Jokhio’s widow Shireen’s video statement, the source said she could not handle court matters and thus forgave the accused for the sake of her children. “After this new development, the case has become more sensitive and sparked a public debate,” the source added.

“The police cannot afford any controversy, which can cause problems in the smooth procedure of the case’s investigation,” the source said.

The source also said that the incumbent IO was appointed at the recommendation of the victim’s family, which had met senior police officials a few days after registering the murder case. The family expressed their discontentment with the performance of the previous investigating unit.

In November 2021, Young Nazim Jokhio was found murdered at the PPP MPA Jam Awais farmhouse in Malir. Awais, his MNA brother Jam Karim and their acquaintances were later secured for allegedly tormenting Jokhio to death as he stopped their foreign visitors from hunting the houbara bustard.
