A Sindh TV anchor Irshad Jagirani was arrested on Wednesday by FIA on charges of harassing and blackmailing his ex-colleague using social media. A huge amount of criticism was seen from the community of Journalists that institutions should deal with such matters on an individual level rather than raiding media houses.
KTN anchor Sahar Shah Rizvi had filed a complaint at the cyber-crime wing, revealing that Jagirani was supposedly harassing her through social media. Information that was gathered from her Facebook also stated that the suspect was harassing and blackmailing her through different IDs on account of selfies taken on several events said the source from FIA.
The evidence from the suspect’s mobile was acquired with the confession of the anchor. He submitted a written apology on his behavior which was reportedly accepted by complainant, said the source.
Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace:
Sexual or any other kind of harassment is a violation of a person’s fundamental right to nobility and dignity, as it is included in the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The constitution gives a right to every citizen of the country to be associated with any occupation and business, which includes the right to have a safe workplace.
In March of this year, Pakistan celebrated the ninth anniversary of its first legislation particularly directing the issue of workspace harassment i.e. “the Protection against the Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2010”.
The act is meant to provide relief to employees whether they are permanent or contractual. Detailed analysis of the execution of the laws suggested that they are violated grossly.
