Sonya Hussyn schooled for her ignorant statement and THIS is why the discussion is important!
The reason why it is so important to address the issue is that our society carelessly labels all sorts of mental illnesses as the same thing
Many artists and celebrities have worked on several projects that promote various causes on domestic and international fronts, and they have undoubtedly generated fruitful results.
However, it is a tough job to ensure that the celebrity involved has enough knowledge about the concerned subject before he or she starts promoting the corresponding cause. An ill-prepared individual could lead to futile efforts or even negative results.
Pakistani actress Sonya Hussyn is currently working on her upcoming drama project Saraab. The drama revolves around her character that suffers from schizophrenia.
Recently the actress made an enlightening post about different symptoms of mental illnesses on her Instagram handle that intended to normalize having a conversation about them. Still, one of her rather uninformed comments under the post ended up doing more harm than good.

Autism and Schizophrenia
Among the list of many conditions shared by the actress, she said “autism” is not a mental illness. Although this could’ve been overlooked as a mistake, because Sonya tried defending her stance, the mistake ended up being a show of ignorance. In her defense, the actor stated:
Autism was a symptom of schizophrenia.
However, in medical science and psychiatry, both autism and schizophrenia are two separate entities. Autism or more accurately Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurotic disorder that manifests in early childhood and is characterized by qualitative abnormalities in social interactions, markedly aberrant communication skills, and restricted, repetitive behaviors, interests, and activities (RRBs). ASD is a group of conditions with deficits in social interaction and communication.
On the flip side, Schizophrenia is a brain disorder that affects how people think, feel, and perceive. The hallmark symptom of schizophrenia is psychosis, such as experiencing auditory hallucinations (voices) and delusions (fixed false beliefs).
Why is Sonya’s Uneducated Statement Problematic?
In response to the criticism, Sonya said:
The reason why it is so important to address the issue is that our society carelessly labels all sorts of mental illnesses as the same thing. But, in reality, just like our human body gets inflicted by different diseases and illnesses, our brain, too, is susceptible to different illnesses. Each illness and condition demands separate diagnosis and treatment.
The struggles of autistic people demand a separate conversation. Carelessly clubbing it under schizophrenia, which is the topic most relevant to Sonya currently due to her upcoming drama, is belittling those struggles.
Undoubtedly Sonya’s post was in good intentions, but it is something very sensitive. Therefore it is high time that our celebrities learn to correctly educate themselves regarding the topics they choose to talk about. With the kind of reach and influence they have, these mistakes, followed by their defense instead of rectification, may end up causing more harm than good.
Although most social media users tend to be cruel and rude in their comments for the most senseless of things, the comments under Sonya’s post took a justified stance that a little research while promoting a particular cause is of utmost importance.
