Sun will directly align over Kaaba today, casting no shadow. Here’s what you can learn about the interesting phenomenon

This was revealed by Majed Abu Zahra, the head of the Jeddah Astronomical Society.

Astronomers have predicted that the sun will align with the Holy Kaaba at the Grand Mosque of Makkah today on Thursday at 12:18 pm local Saudi time (2.18 pm Pakistan time).

The sun’s disc will be located directly over the Kaaba and it will lose its shadow for a short time.

This was revealed by Majed Abu Zahra, the head of the Jeddah Astronomical Society.

Astronomers explain the astronomical phenomenon called “zero shadows” occurs twice annually at the Grand Mosque due to its position between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator.

Periodically, the exceptional culmination in the Kaaba happens on the 27th or the 28th of May at around 12:18 SAST, and on the 15th or the 16th of July at 12:27 SAST.

This phenomenon coincides with the solar noon and the Zuhr prayer adhan in Makkah.

Due to the angle of the Earth’s axis, the sun moves at 23.5 degrees north and south of the astronomical equator.

As a result, the sun falls straight overhead on areas lying over the equator during an equinox.

Abu Zahra explained that people can discover the exact direction of the Kaaba by fixing a wooden stick vertically in the ground.

The direction of the Kaaba will be the exact opposite of the stick’s shadow.

This view is called rasd al-qibla (“observing the qibla”).

This observation is not noticeable in the hemisphere opposite the Kaaba, in which the events happen when the sun is underneath the horizon.

This hemisphere includes most of the Americas, Eastern Indonesia, the Pacific Ocean, and Australia.

Individuals in these regions can witness a relative event when the sun moves straight above the antipodal point of the earth. This is the point that is right opposite the Kaaba.
