Swat: Six women were killed in the name of honor in a single month

Six women were killed in the name of honor in Pakhtunkhwa’s Swat in one month. At least six out of eight women were murdered by their husbands, and the other two committed suicide during the past month of March.

According to the police, on 12 March 2020, a man killed his wife in Bangrgey Nawagai Village in the tehsil of Barikot. However, it was initially reported to the police that the woman was attacked by ‘unidentified people’. After investigation, it was revealed that the deceased’s husband and sons were guilty.

How it unfolded:

DSP Barikot Tehsil Badshah Hazrat said he did not believe the report of the husband and began looking into the matter. It was then found that not only the husband and three sons but the victim’s brother was also involved in the crime. The DSP added that these five culprits have been arrested, further saying that the murder was done in name of honor.

This is one of the many cases that have taken place in Swat in the last one month. On April 4^th, Anwar Shahid shot his wife after a verbal fight.

The incident took place at the Rasha Gatta area of the Kokaria union council. The police then filed a case against the accused and began searching for him. On the 9^th of April, the police arrested Anwar Sher, who also killed his wife over a domestic issue, in the same locality.

Shakir, a resident of Charbagh, shot his wife dead on April 17^th. The police said the girl, got a divorce from her husband and wanted to marry another man. On 22^nd April, Bakth Taj shot his wife dead over a domestic issue as well. The police have filed the case and are looking into it.

A women’s right activist Shamsher Ali said the killing of women in the name of honor has become common and is a serious issue. He added that laws should be implemented to stop such crimes.
