A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, has revealed that China will be their “main partner” and will help them rebuild Afghanistan.
During a recent interview with the Italian newspaper, La Repubblica Mujahid said, “China will be our main partner. It is a great opportunity for us because the Chinese government is ready to invest in our country and support restoration efforts.”
He said the Taliban appreciate China’s Belt and Road Initiative as the project would revive the ancient Silk Road.
The spokesperson further went on to say that China would also help Afghanistan fully utilize its rich copper resources and help make its path into international markets.
He added that the Taliban also view Russia as a great ally in the region and maintain good relations with Moscow.
Regarding the Kabul airport, Mujahid said the facility is entirely under Taliban control but has been severely damaged.
Turkey and Qatar have been leading efforts to resume operations at the airport; he told the Italian news outlet.
“The airport should be clean within the next couple of days and will be reconstructed in a short time. I hope it’ll be operational again in September.”
On relations with Italy, Mujahid said the Taliban hope the European country will recognize their government and reopen its embassy in Kabul.
The Taliban took control of Afghanistan on the 15th of August after President Ashraf Ghani and other top officials fled the country.The group has been working to form a government, and an announcement is expected soon.
