‘If honesty can increase tax collection, Maulana Tariq Jameel should run FBR’
The PTI government has struggled to motivate the people to adopt the tax culture even after two years in power.
- Pakistan’s leading tax expert has said that only “honest leadership” is not enough to raise taxes.
The Pakistani researcher and international tax lawyer, Dr. Ikram ul Haq, said if honesty alone can increase tax collection, we should request religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jameel to head the FBR.
In an interview with a local news channel, the renowned tax expert said that the enforcement of laws and technology are keys to achieving tax collection targets for the Federal Board of Revenue.
“If tax collection can be increased through honesty alone, we should ask Maulana Tariq Jameel to become the chairman of the FBR,” Haq quipped.
The comment came in the context of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s strong belief during his election campaign before the 2018 elections, that an “honest leadership” could influence people to pay taxes and become a tax-compliant state.
Haq added, “Despite honest leadership, the PTI government has struggled to motivate the people to adopt the tax culture even after two years in power.”
It was revealed during the program that roughly 6.5 million people holding National Tax Numbers were supposed to file tax returns. However, as many as 4.7 million or 72% of them did not.
