According to research from the University of Alabama, terrorist attacks carried out by Muslim extremists receive 357% more press coverage in the United States as compared to acts of terror carried out by non-Muslims or white nationalists. The study revealed the hypocrisy by western media while reporting incidents of terrorism, exposing how their ‘humanist’ values have a different meaning depending on who is carrying out the attack.

To sketch out these findings, the researchers controlled for factors like target type, number of fatalities, and whether or not the perpetrators were arrested before reaching their final statistic. It was noticed that terror attacks carried out by non-Muslims (religion unknown in most of the cases) received an average of 15 headlines. However, there was a stark difference with the terror attacks carried out by Islamist extremists, that received an average of 105 headlines.

The disparity in media coverage, that is in sync with the reality, shows the double-standards when white and rightwing terrorists were responsible for nearly twice as many terrorist attacks as Muslim extremists between the years under study (2008 and 2016). Lead researcher Erin Kearns further explained that it must be kept under consideration that the audience of all the headlines were not the same people.
“We broke it down by the two different types of sources and we found that the over-coverage is much bigger among national news sources than local papers.” – Erin said.
