Morocco was one of the highlights of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and after their match against Spain, the team players brought out the Palestinian flag to show support.

This meaningful gesture resonated with Palestinians as they said that the campaign shows their cause is not ‘forgotten about.’ It is important to mention that like many other Arab nations, Morocco has also agreed to diplomatic ties with Israel, but the players were sure to make their stance clear on the decades-old problem. Likewise, the players have also made pro-Palestine social media posts during the world cup.

Palestinian cause not forgotten

Owner of a sporting goods store, Saeed al-Ramahi said that the enthusiasm shown by the team seemed unquenchable as all of the team’s jerseys were sold out. He added that if he had 300,000 shirts, all of them would’ve been sold out in two days.

Palestinian top football official, Rajoub said that this proves that the people are still with their nation, regardless of the decisions made by their leaders. He added that the world cup has shown that the cause is not buried by ‘normalization agreements.’ The people of Palestine also condemned the agreements, labeling them a ‘stab in the back,’ and the betrayal of the decades-old Arab league position.

Many Arab states secured diplomatic gains through the agreements. For Morocco, this came after the Trump administration recognized Rabat’s sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara. In a study released by the leading Palestinian public polling group, it was shown that the World Cup in Qatar helped to restore the Palestinian public’s trust in the Arab world after so many years of disappointment.

Rajoub also called Palestine the ’33rd team’ to qualify for the World Cup going on in Qatar. A spokesperson for Gaza’s rulers, Hazem Qassem, said that the World Cup has reaffirmed the importance of the Palestinian cause on the international scene.

The Maariv newspaper in a commentary remarked that the World Cup has proven the Arab world is far from normalization from Israel. Another newspaper, Haaretz, said that the real winner of the World Cup on social media is Palestine.
