The Indian state Kerala has been known for its effective governance model. Now it has also emerged as a success story in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recent data has shown that Kerala has become the first state of the country to have higher number of recovered cases than active ones. The number of cases dropped by 30 percent in the first week of April when compared to the last week of March.

What factors led to the effective contamination of the infection?

Experts have attributed Kerala’s success against the virus to three factors:

  • Unlike other regions of the country, the public healthcare system was a priority sector in Kerala’s development plan.
  • Community outreach is central to fighting a pandemic involving rigorous contact tracing, mass quarantine, and other preventive measures.
  • Citizens of the state behave with a high degree of responsibility, which helped the government to flatten the virus curve.

Moreover, several NGO’s and social support groups joined hands with the government and provided facilities to the underprivileged. These organizations played a huge role in ensuring adequate distribution of food to the poor during the lockdown.

The Health Minister of Kerala, KK Shailaja, has been praised for the way in which she has been leading the state’s response to the coronavirus epidemic.
