Following the 9/11 attacks, America went to war in Afghanistan in the name of national security and the protection of basic rights and self-determination, with an affirmed secondary goal of liberating the people of Afghanistan from the tyrannical rule of the Taliban.

However, for over 20 years, the United States maintained a system of detentions and arrests as part of its military and intelligence operations that violated international human rights law and international humanitarian law.

In doing so, the United States endangered the lives of Afghan civilians, undermining efforts to restore the rule of law in Afghanistan.

Various reports and documentaries showed how U.S. forces arrested and detained local afghans during their stay in Afghanistan. They detailed numerous abuses by U.S. personnel, including excessive force cases during arrests, arbitrary and indefinite detention, and mistreatment of detainees.

Moreover, overall legal deficiencies of the U.S. administered detention system in Afghanistan operated almost entirely outside the rule of law.

A viral thread on twitter shows how the US forces used to treat local Afghans.

“You always wanted to know in no more than 2 minutes & 8 seconds what went wrong in Afghanistan and how the Taliban won the war?”
