Thousands Of Pakistanis Changing Their Nationality To Afghan For $400 UN Allowance – NADRA

NADRA (National Database and Registration Authority) has identified that thousands of Pakistanis who have registered themselves as Afghan refugees for $400 only. Usman Yusuf Mubeen, Chairman NADRA, has revealed that at least 10,000 Pakistanis have registered themselves with a different national identity. They have done it with an intention of availing allowance of 400 US Dollars announced by United Nations High Commission for refugees, for those who are willing repatriate voluntarily to their home country.

The revelation was made during a briefing Standing Committee on Interior on blocked National Identity Cards. The meeting was chaired by Senator Rehman Malik.

“There were 2.4 million registered Afghan refugees in Pakistan at one time” – Mr Mubeen said, also adding that 1.5 million unregistered Afghan refugees were also living in the country.
Chairman NADRA also revealed that till date, about one million refugees have returned back to Afghanistan under the voluntary repatriation scheme. He further added that each refugee has received $400 as an assistance package as announced by UN High Commission for Refugees, including their newborns. Senator Malik said that NADRA should have clarity between Afghan refugees and Pakistani nationals. He added that the seven documents, that are required to verify the nationality should be reviewed so that the verification process can be simplified while making it effective at the same time.
He further said that laws can be amended to make the process convenient for the people who are not literate enough to follow the process.
