Soniya, a stage performer, was shot dead in Peshawar on Friday night. She is the third dancer brutally gunned down in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during this year so far.
The dangerous trend has been going on for a while and showbiz stars, particularly women, have been killed with impunity in the province. However, despite it being a repetitive sight, nothing has been done to put an end to this deadly trend.
Soniya was allegedly killed by her suitor, named Musaddaq, at her residence in Chowk Shadi Peer area old city. DSP Kotwali Malik Habib told a local news source that Musaddaq was Soniya’s suitor for a while. She was shot by him, leaving her critically wounded, on refusing his marriage proposal.
She was rushed to Lady Reading Hospital when she succumbed to deadly wounds. Musaddaq, who is a resident of Parang area of Charsadda district, fled the scene after killing her. The police registered FIR against the culprit on the complaint of her sworn brother Jan Alam, starting a manhunt for him.
This is not the first incident of this nature. Earlier this year in February, popular stage dancer Sunbul was murdered in Mardan for refusing to perform. A few months later, another performer named Resham was shot dead by her husband over a minor domestic dispute in Nowshera.
During the same month, another performer Neelum Gul’s video went viral where she was tortured by her husband. She later urged the authorities to provide her security as she was facing life threats.
For stage performers in conservative countries like Pakistan, home is not always safe. Strict action needs to be taken to assure the safety of our artists.
