The Princess' first visit lasted four days, in which she dined with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and visited various places including:
- Princess Diana visited Pakistan thrice: in 1991, 1996 and 1997.
- Princess Diana’s 1991 visit to Pakistan was her first official solo trip to the country, which lasted for four days.
- The other two visits of Princess Diana were prompted by Imran Khan who invited the Princess to participate in the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital’s fund-raising.
Princess Diana’s 1995 controversial BBC interview that sent shockwaves through the royal family is back in focus. Authorities are investigating whether the interviewer, Martin Bashir, acquired the interview under false pretenses.
Since the Princess is once again in the spotlight, we bring Pakistanis a throwback to when Princess Diana visited Pakistan.
In her short life period, Princess Diana visited Pakistan more than once. The first visit happened in 1991, following another in 1996 and finally one in 1997.
Princess Diana’s 1991 visit to Pakistan was her first official solo trip to the country. Ken Wharfe, the Princess’s bodyguard at the time, released a book about his experiences working for the Princess. In his book, Wharfe described the Pakistan tour as hugely positive.
Diana had taken Pakistan by storm. Her visit had been a resounding success. The tabloids predictably hailed her vociferously as the jewel in the royal family’s crown.
The Princess’ first visit lasted four days, in which she dined with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and visited various places including:
- Badshahi Mosque
- Kinnaird College
- A family welfare center in Islamabad
- Khyber Rifles in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Five years later, in 1996, Imran Khan invited Princess Diana for the fund-raising of Pakistan’s first charity cancer hospital, Shaukat Khanum. Diana accepted the invite and visited Pakistan with Lady Annabel Goldsmith, the mother of Khan’s wife (at the time) Jemima Khan.
Princess Diana spent her second trip participating in fund-raising events and visiting sick children:
A year later, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital’s construction was completed. Therefore, Princess revisited Pakistan in 1997 to attend the opening ceremony of the hospital.
The 1997 visit was Princess Diana’s final trip to Pakistan, before the tragic car crash in Paris took her life.
