25000 motorcyclists fined during two days in Karachi for not wearing helmets

To raise awareness regarding the consequences of not wearing helmets, Karachi traffic police has fined 25,531 people in the first two days of Helmet Nahi To Kuch Nahi alone.

A collective amount of Rs 3.8 million was fined. Additionally, a total of 16,014 motorcycles was impounded. Karachi Additional IG Ameer Sheikh directed the police to start a helmet awareness campaign in the port city. The campaign started on July 1st and over 25000 people were penalized in the first two days.

The motorcyclists were fined for not wearing helmets, which was made mandatory as part of the campaign.

“It will be prohibited to ride a motorcycle on Sharae Faisal without a helmet,” Sheikh said.

Special appeals were made to the motorcyclists to abide by the rules and follow the safety measures, for their own sake. However, still, the carelessness regarding road safety and fearlessness with regards to the law lead to heavy fines.

Road accidents in Pakistan claimed 36,000 lives in 2018 alone:

Road safety remains an ignored subject of discussion in Pakistan while it claimed about 36,000 lives in the year 2018 alone. The statistics were revealed by Motorway police SSP Asghar Ali Yousafzai (know more here).

SSP revealed during the session that road accidents claimed 1.2 million lives worldwide every year and disregard to traffic laws is the prime reason for that. He added these accidents can be significantly reduced if drivers start respecting the rules and take appropriate safety measures.
