The North Waziristan faction of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has announced a three-week-long ceasefire that started on Friday and will continue till the 21st of October, 2021.

The ceasefire announcement comes hours after the Prime Minister, Imran Khan, revealed in an interview with a Turkish news channel that the government was in talks with some factions of the TTP for “peace and reconciliation.”

A tribal leader from North Waziristan has confirmed that the talks between the government and a North Waziristan-based TTP were going on for some time.

Earlier, PM Imran Khan had revealed in an interview with TRT World that different groups make up the TTP. The government is in talks with some of them. The talks are being held in Afghanistan.

The premier added that the government is willing to “forgive” the banned groups’ members if they lay down their arms and become “normal citizens.”

PM Imran Khan remarked that he was expecting a deal to be reached between the government and some factions of the TTP. However, he added that “nothing is certain.”

Meanwhile, the North Waziristan faction of the outlawed TTP announced a ceasefire from the 1st of October till the 21st of October, 2021.

The outlawed group added that the ceasefire could be extended if the negotiation process progressed peacefully.

The tribal leader from North Waziristan involved in these talks revealed that the TTP had put forward three demands to the government.Firstly, the government should de-merge the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province.

Secondly, the government should allow the TTP commanders to carry weapons.

Thirdly, the government should release the TTP prisoners.

The tribal leader added that some of the conditions had been agreed upon.

Earlier in September, President Arif Alvi had remarked that the government is willing to grant a “general amnesty” to the TTP if they lay down their weapons and adhere to the constitution.
