Turkish companies ink the ‘biggest defense contract’ for Pakistan’s Stealth Ships
At the start of June 2020, Pakistan formally began the construction of the 2 MILGEM Corvettes at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KSEW).
Turkey’s Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik ve Ticaret A.Ş. (STM) has signed an agreement with ASFAT for supplying the main drive system of ‘MILGEM Ada Class Corvettes’, which Turkey is developing for Pakistan.
The STM will deliver and manage the integration of the main propulsion systems of the MILGEM Corvettes. The MILGEM Corvettes is an indispensable part that provides power for the movement of the vessel.
At the start of June 2020, Pakistan formally began the construction of the 2 MILGEM Corvettes at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KSEW). The Turkish Navy also began the construction of 2 MILGEM Corvettes after a ceremony held in Istanbul.
2 MILGEM Corvettes will be sent to Pakistan Navy in 2023, and the remaining two will join after a year.
In July of 2018, Pakistan Navy signed an agreement with ASFAT for 4 MILGEM-class ships to further strengthen its defensive abilities. This deal is the biggest ever single defense export deal Turkey has done with any other country.
Under this deal, 2 MILGEM-class ships were to be constructed in Pakistan, and two others to be built in Turkey.
What is MILGEM?
The MILGEM Ada Class Corvette is a modern stealth patrol and anti-submarine warfare combatant naval ship.
It is a state-of-the-art surface platform, that is equipped with modern subsurface, anti-air weapons, sensors, combat management systems, and the modern surface.
