Turkish defense giant to open offices in Pakistan as both sign a multi-million dollar agreement
Pakistan's defense industry is developing and it wants to make its impact in the global market.
Turkey’s defense giant ASELSAN (Askeri Elektronik Sanayi, Military Electronic Industries) is getting ready to launch its offices in Pakistan from January 1, 2020.
According to Turkish media sources, the company is likely to open its base in Ukraine as well. It is aiming to reinforce its marketing openings and expand its defense transactions with Pakistan.
A close and harmonious relationship is present between the traditional allies, Turkey and Pakistan. A convergence of national interests of both nations is significant in the recent consolidation of defense interests. Pakistan’s defense industry is developing and it wants to make its impact in the global market.
Pakistan Army’s T129 ATAK attack helicopter program:
Aselsan disclosed that to supply subsystems for the Pakistan Navy’s four MILGEM (i.e., Jinnah-class) multi-mission corvettes/light frigates, the company got a €176.9 million contract from ASFAT A.Ş (Military Factory and Shipyard Management Inc) in November 2019.
Aselan’s first largest project involving Pakistan was a $254.73 million US deal in July for the Pakistan Army’s T129 ATAK attack helicopter program. This was Aselan’s second mega-project involving Pakistan.
The contract for the four MILGEMs was signed with ASFAT A.Ş by Pakistan’s Ministry of Defence Production (MoDP) in July 2018. Supposedly, US$1.5 billion is the value of the Pakistani MILGEM contract. With the first ship set to arrive in 2022-2023, the four ships will be delivered to Pak Navy by 2023-2024.
According to the contract with the two ships being built in Turkey, they will be manufactured by Pakistan’s Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KSEW). Pakistan will also be given a “complete transfer of technology and the transfer of intellectual property for the design of (the MILGEM).”
ASELAN’s top military hardware buyer:
Pakistan is ASELSAN ‘s top buyer of military hardware. Pakistan Navy brought ‘torpedo rockets’ from ASELSAN, which is created to counter short proximity activities on May 19.
ASELSAN is worldwide known for manufacturing electronic warfare, weapons, command control and navigation systems. It is currently selling its products to 65 countries. Now, the company is focusing to enlarge its defense transactions.
The company’s offices are located in the Philippines, Qatar, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, etc as well. The offices are run by Turkish general managers and employ local staff.
As compared to $1.87 billion in 2018, ASELSAN is expected to close 2019 with $2.9 billion in revenue. ASELSAN was ranked 52nd in the Defense News Top 100 list 2018 with $1.8 billion in defense revenue last year. According to the Swedish-based Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), ASELSAN has been ranked 54th among the largest 100 defense companies.
