Twitter expands its policy to curb hate speech towards religious groups

Technology is neither an evil nor a blessing the real meaning of technology depends upon how one utilizes it. Looking at the bad use of it in the form of hate content promotion Twitter announces to curb the dehumanizing posts likewise dehumanizing images or texts.

“Today we’re announcing an expansion to this policy which will address dehumanizing language towards religious groups. This is just the first step. Over time we’ll expand the policy to include more groups and update you along the way,” reports twitter safety.

Our primary focus is on addressing the risks of offline harm. The research shows that dehumanizing language increases that risk. We’re expanding our rules against the hateful conduct that dehumanizes others on the basis of religion, added Twitter safety team.

Twitter says to remove such tweets when reported.

Twitter has specifically started off from religious groups based on the feedback and responses that Twitter received directly from different communities and cultures who use the app around the globe.

The Twitter team also included examples of the type of hate speech that will be removed: the description of members of a religion as ‘disgusting’ or ‘filthy animals.’

What is hate speech?

Hate speech is any form of expression including text or image or video that increases the risk factor among the audience to participate in violence against other members or community.

How to counter hate content?

  1. Inhibiting the speech
  2. Limiting the dissemination
  3. Providing awareness to the audience against such hate speech so they’re less likely to be influenced.

Twitter safety team also said to continue to build the application for the global community and to continue to provide regular updates that it is doing to make Twitter a safe place for everyone.
