UK introduces a simplified points-based ‘Student Visa Policy’. Here’s all you need to know

Under the new visa regime, international students will require 70 points to get a study visa for the United Kingdom.

David Cameron’s government revised the student visa policy back in 2010 after tens of thousands of Pakistani students studied and settled in the United Kingdom every year.

The revised tier-4 visa policy stated:

Students can live in the UK for an extra two years on a work-permit visa after completing studies. However, the new work-permit limit is reduced to just four months.

After the policy was implemented, many international students struggled to find sponsors to attain permanent residency. Due to the setback, many returned to their respective countries.

The revised policy also declined international students’ enrollment in UK universities drastically. Many universities started criticizing the new student visa policy and ran campaigns to dismiss the system.

Their efforts bore fruit last month when the UK government introduced a new points-based student visa, simplifying the procedure.

Under the new visa regime, international students will require 70 points to get a study visa for the United Kingdom.

How can students achieve these 70 points?

To achieve these points, students can:

  • demonstrate that they have an offer from an approved educational institution (50 points)
  • speak English proficiently (10 points)
  • support themselves during their studies in the UK (10 points)

Regarding the new visa policy, UK Minister for Future Borders and Immigration, Kevin Foster, said:

Now we have left the EU; we are free to unleash this country’s full potential and implement the changes we need to restore trust in the immigration system and attract talent to drive our economy forward. I hope that the new visa policy will help us do so.

The UK Home Office said:

The new route treats all students equally, including students from Europe coming to study. We have planned to give 600,000 visas by 2030.

How to ensure you are eligible for a UK points-based visa?

To be eligible for a UK points-based visa, students must choose an institution approved by the British government. Here is the list of the institutions licensed to sponsor migrant students under this program.

In similar news, the UK government plans to initiate a new ‘Graduates Scheme’ from summer 2021. The scheme allows a two-year work permit to any student pursuing a master’s degree in the UK.
