Unauthorized Campuses: Students Protest As Their Degrees Are On Stake

While the rest of Pakistan celebrated New Year, students of the University of Sargodha were on roads, protesting. UoS barred its campuses in Lahore, Lyallpur and Mandi Bahauddin after orders from HEC (Higher Education Commission). HEC ordered to shut the campuses down for their sub-standard quality of education and the degrees offered were illegitimate. Later last year, the campuses stopped taking more admission however the future of students already pursuing their degrees was put on the stake.

The administration committed to facilitate the process however later delayed it by several months. The students protested for their rights, pressurising the administration to take notice of their grievances, pushing for action.

 

CJP TAKES NOTICE OF GROWING BUSINESS OF ‘EDUCATION’ IN PAKISTAN

Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar took Suo Moto notice of the growing business of private universities in Punjab. Minting money in the name of education, 18 out of 24 universities named in this fake-degree scandal last year were located in Lahore.

Thousands of students have already completed their degrees or are still pursuing them in these educational institutions – putting a big question mark on their future.

These universities are offering BS, MS, M.Phil and PhD under illegal departments. HEC (Higher Education Commission) had issued a warning letter to the universities but no significant action was taken.

Among the named universities running illegal programs were: Global Institute Lahore,  University of Faisalabad, University of Wah Cantt, Hijvery University Lahore,  HITEC University Taxila, National College of Business Management and Economics Lahore, University of Lahore, Institute of Southern Punjab Multan,  Lahore Leads University, Minhas University Lahore, Noor International University Lahore, University of Management and Technology Lahore,  Superior College Lahore, University of South Asia Lahore, Lahore Garrison University, Beacon House National University Lahore and University of Central Punjab Lahore.

CJP took Suo Moto of the mushrooming of these institutions and sub-par standards provided by them. He called for a detailed report on facilities and standards of higher learning in Punjab’s private universities.

A three-member bench SC was conducting a hearing into a petition related to the non-issuance of degrees to students by an affiliate college of the University of South Asia Lahore in November 2018. The students have recorded their protests last month as well, taking to streets of Lahore, for the said injustice.
The Supreme Court also had taken a Suo Moto notice of the private universities, quality of learning and exorbitant fee structure. An HEC representative during the hearing commented that an institution “should not only be awarding degrees but also have proper teaching staff to educate the students”.

CJP commented that these universities are defrauding people, hence criminal cases need to be filed against them for opening campuses against the law.

The CJP additionally formed a separate committee consisting of legal expert Zafar Iqbal and FIA (Federal Investigation Agency) Director Waqar Abbasi to probe into the matter and conduct an inquiry scrutinizing facilities being provided at private universities in Punjab.
