Was the University of Peshawar closed for Gul Panra to record a PSL song? [VIDEO]
Here's what happened!
In a rather strange notification, the University of Peshawar (UoP) was closed on February 14th to observe Kashmir Day, which had passed more than a week ago. However, the reason for closing the university turned out to be totally different.
According to a report, the university was closed to let renowned singer Gul Panra record her song for the final of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). “Had the university been opened, she wouldn’t have been able to do the recordings,” an academician told local media outlet.
The administration had issued a notification a few days ago to announce the closure of the university. Different seminars and other events were arranged on February 14 to show solidarity with Kashmiris.
At first, the notifications was taken positively as many believed that the administration had taken this step to avoid any unpleasant event. In the past, there have been clashes between those who celebrate the Valentine’s day and those against it.
Later, it turned out that the entire university was closed to facilitate Gul Panra record a song. “Dances and loud music kept the university alive all day,” a university teacher said.
President Peshawar University Teachers Association (PUTA) Dr Jamil Ahmad Chitrali in a video message condemned the closure of the university for recording of the music video. In a press release, PUTA demanded the Chancellor and Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shah Farman to conduct an impartial inquiry into the matter and suspend the vice-chancellor.
The spokesman for the university denied the reports. According to him, the PSL organisers approached them after the notification for the closure of the university had already been issued a day before. Furthermore, he also stated that the university granted them permission after receiving a letter from the deputy commissioner’s office.
“Mr Shamsher Ali Khan, SK films, Lahore is allowed to hold the event – recording of video shoot regarding the PSL Final match from February 13 to 18 – at Islamia College, the University of Peshawar, cafes of Peshawar and the walled city,” reads the letter issued by DC office.
The University of Peshawar spokesman added that the recordings at the university were held on Sunday and Monday, which had nothing to with the holiday. Moreover, he clarified that there was song recording as well as a short film about the university’s role.
