INSIGHT: US Presidential Election 2020 and the influence of Muslim voters
It should be noted that America houses approximately 3.45 million Muslims, which includes thousands of professionals (particularly physicians).
Recently, five American broadcasting service journalists were fired for publishing Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden’s election message in Urdu.
It is difficult to wrap your head around the fact that a bunch of people lost their jobs because of a publication alone. However, the matter does not seem so trivial when looked at with the 2020 elections in mind.
The 2020 presidential elections are different. President Donald Trump and Joe Biden are locked in a close contest, which makes one thing obvious – All Votes Count. Since all votes are being given extreme importance, the votes of Pakistanis living in the country, matter highly too.
It should be noted that America houses approximately 3.45 million Muslims, which includes thousands of professionals (particularly physicians). The number makes it clear that the Pakistani community can make or break the elections; In fact, Muslim voters can tip the final election results to either side. This fact gives the Muslim community an influence greater than their size.
It is pertinent to mention that Pakistani and other Muslim voters are concentrated in the key swing and battleground states, such as Michigan, Florida, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. Two of these states, Michigan and Wisconsin, changed from blue to red (Republican) in 2016, as Democrats lost Michigan by less than 20,000 votes.
Michigan is populated by more than 100,000 Muslim voters who can help the Democrats take the state back in the 2020 elections. Similarly, other key states are also filled with the Pakistani community that can be game-changers. Sources say there is a high possibility that Biden gets 270 of the 435 electoral votes he needs for the White House due to the Muslim community.
Usually, small deviations like the Urdu publishing of Joe Biden’s election message would be ignored. However, since the Muslim population holds a more significant ground, the Trump administration could not let Joe Biden win them all over. Thus, the administration reacted so strongly to the Voice of America’s Urdu message and got five journalists fired.
