[VIDEO] President Alvi says he is ‘not aware of wheat crisis in Pakistan’
President of Pakistan Dr. Arif Alvi said he has no idea about any wheat crisis in the country. But, he should have known about it.
On Monday, the president went on a surprise visit to the National Institute of Child Health (NICH) along with his wife. Executive Director Dr. Jamal Raza welcomed the two and gave them a tour of the hospital.
While speaking to the journalists later, Dr. Arif Alvi said the Prime Minister advised him to visit the hospital.
“It is regrettable how patients have no other choice but to share beds for treatment and their families are being sent to buy medicines from outside the hospital,” he said.
When discussing the state of the hospitals and the government’s inability to bring relief to the citizens, he said that PTI did not know the country’s economic conditions while making promises before the 2018 elections.
When asked about the wheat crisis, the president replied that he had no idea about it.
‘’But I should have known’’, he added.
The incumbent government was first warned about the wheat issue in September last year. Many senior officials also suggested appropriate measures. However, the government turned a deaf ear to the warning.
The crisis resurfaced when Sindh decided to not procure wheat as officials were facing corruption inquiries on its procurement. Punjab, on the other hand, had imposed a ban on inter-provincial movement of wheat.
Making use of the situation, profiteers and hoarders began stockpiling wheat and this increased the problem.
The federal government refused to take responsibility for the problems. As per them, it is the province’s job to procure wheat.
