Wanted To Become A Cricketer, Forced To Become A Doctor – Medical Student Takes His Life

Mental health has been an under-discussed and less talked about topic in Pakistani society and what worsens it the lack of support from own families. Another victim of such customary and suffocating societal practices is a 20-year-old student from Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS).

With a gunshot wound on his temple and a pistol in his right hand – another dream was found shattered the hostel room last week. Atif Arain was found dead in his room, succumbing to depression. While the university administration already hinted at it being a possible suicide case and admitted the failure on their end to not see his lack of interest in studies.

Before attempting suicide, the deceased also send a message to his friendAaj ki raat bari yadgar hogi (Tonight will be very memorable)”. He failed to understand the meaning of it at that time but later it appears to be a hint.

“He wanted to be a cricketer or a chartered accountant” – revealed Jamshoro SSP Tauqir Naeem to a local news source.
