Throwback 1999: Wasim Akram reveals the real story behind Kumble’s 10 wickets against Pakistan
Akram presented another perspective in a recent YouTube video.
Back in 1999, while playing against Pakistan in Delhi, Anil Kumble made history by dismissing all ten batsmen in a single Test match innings, and joined Jim Laker, English cricketer, as the only players to achieve the feat in the history of first-class.
The incident has a lot of rumors and myths attached to it. One such rumor revolves around Pakistan’s batting that how they wanted to deny Kumble’s 10th wicket by throwing them away.
Wasim Akram once shared that Waqar Younis wanted to run himself out and not let Kumble take the 10th wicket, however, Wasim persuaded him not to do this.
‘It never happened’, Waqar publicly slammed the claim.
Recently, Wasim presented another story and said that being the captain of the team; he did not want Kumble to take his wicket and requested Waqar to play his shots against Javagal Srinath.
“No. This is against the sportsman’s spirit (desperately getting out another bowler). I said to Waqar Younis that you play Anil Kumble, I will not get out to him”.
As a captain, I told Waqar to play his normal game and go for shots against (Javagal) Srinath. The first ball Kumble bowled… inside edge…and I got caught. It’s a big day for India and Kumble. It was massive.” said Wasim in a recent Youtube video with Aakash Chopra.
